Sydney CBD WSET programs announced
Starting in June this year, the Sydney Wine Academy will introduce WSET courses and other specialist wine courses in Sydney CBD.
The Academy will run WSET Award Levels 1, 2, and 3 at The Sydney Hotel School.

Victorian WSET programs announced
Starting in May this year, the Sydney Wine Academy will introduce WSET courses at two great locations in Victoria.
In the Melbourne CBD, the Academy will run WSET Award Levels 1, 2, and 3 at Papa Goose restaurant in Flinders Lane, a venue that is already known for providing some of the finest food and wine experiences in Melbourne. The training will be held in the restaurant’s private upstairs function room.
Regional Victorians from the Bendigo area will now be able to undertake the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines at Wine Bank on View, a wine bar and wine merchant operating from a heritage listed bank building in Central Bendigo. The training will add to the Wine Bank’s already impressive range of wine related services, including offering one of the most extensive selections of regional Victorian and international wines in Australia.

Canberra Course Dates announced for 2013
The University House, at the Australian National University is the new home to the Academy's Canberra based Courses. The Academy will run a WSET Award Level 2 in Wines and Spirits over three Mondays 6th, 20th May and 3rd June. Conducted by Academy Director Clive Hartley, it is the second time that WSET course have been run in the Nation's Capital. The Academy will offer a WSET Award level 3 course later this year in the ACT.

Build your wine tourism business with winery/cellar door events training
The Sydney Wine Academy and Ryde Campus are offering a NEW customised Certificate III in Events for people in the events and wine industry.
This online distance education course is a unique training opportunity for people to establish and build the event and function business at a cellar door operation.
The course covers the skills required to organise a professionally run event in a winery and covers:
Health Safety & Security procedures are covered and Preparing Business Documents to enable graduates to cover all aspects of an event that takes place at a cellar door such as: weddings, concerts, wine festivals, meetings, conventions and conferences.
Promoting wine tourism and coordinating winery events are key topics of the course.
All study and assessments will be conducted online over one semester (18 weeks) by experienced event and wine industry specialists. Fees are $396 per semester.

Sydney Wine Academy student wins UK WSET Level 3 scholarship for a second year
Current SWA diploma student Kate Swain has been awarded the Wine Australia Scholarship for 2012. This scholarship is open to top achievers in the Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits from mainland China, North East Asia, South East Asia and Australia who have completed their studies in the previous academic year. Kate completed her Level 3 Award at a SWA course in Melbourne through her
employer - Vintage Cellars.
Kate wins a VIP trip to some of Australia's top wine regions. This is the second year that a SWA student has taken out this National Award.

SWA lecturer and students compete in 2012 Vin de Champagne Awards final
Sydney Wine Academy lecturer Annette Lacey has successfully made it through to the national final of the CIVC 2012 Vin de Champagne Awards, in the professional category. Annette is currently studying for her Masters of Wine (MW) and this is the second time she has advanced to the finals.
Our students have also excelled. Karen Macalister, Head of the McWilliam's Academy of Wine, also made it through to the final. Karen has just completed her WSET Diploma studies at the Sydney Wine Academy.
In the Amateur category, SWA first year WSET Diploma student Tom Warrell has made it through to the final.
The final judging is on 26 September when the finalists will be required to show their skills in tasting a range of Champagne styles.
Following the judging, the winners will be announced in the evening at a gala black tie dinner at The Pavilion, where renowned chef Justin North will create a menu to match fifteen Champagne Wines.
Invited guests include high profile members of the community and Australia’s most respected wine and food industry leaders and media. Winners receive a two-week educational tour to the Champagne district in France, where they receive their medal from Le Comité Champagne and enjoy the legendary Champenois hospitality.

SWA to offer WSET course in Canberra ACT
In a new initiative the Sydney Wine Academy is delighted to offer the WSET Level 2 Intermediate Certificate in Wines and Spirits in the ACT.
The course is held over three Mondays with the first course starting on 15 October 2012 at Podfood Restaurant at Pialligo. The course includes morning tea and lunch provided by chef and owner, John Leverink and his creative team at Podfood.

Cabernet Uncorked tasting with Phil Reedman
Master of Wine Phil Reedman is returning to the Academy on Monday 19th November to host another Cabernet Uncorked tasting.
Phil will conduct a comparative tasting of Bordeaux and classic Australian cabernets that highlight the communes of Bordeaux against Australia’s premium Cabernet regions. A range of vintages will be presented with the great 2005 Bordeaux vintage being well represented.
The two and a half hour session will give an insight into Bordeaux, its recent vintages and Australia’s best Cabernet regions. Twelve wines will be served

SWA celebrates first 10 graduates in WSET Diploma in Wines and Spirits
The first Sydney-based WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wine and Spirits program concluded in March, with ten students successfully gaining their diploma qualification.

The program was launched at the Sydney Wine Academy (part of The Northern Sydney Institute) in February 2010. The program enables students in Australia to further their WSET studies and to gain specialist industry and product knowledge while learning how to professionally evaluate wines and spirits in a systematic approach.
The graduates are now eligible to become Associate Members of the Institute of Wines and Spirits (AIWS), which provides continual professional development throughout their career.

Ian Harris, the global CEO of WSET congratulated the students and the Academy. “This is an outstanding achievement by the students and the Sydney Wine Academy," he said.
"The Academy has demonstrated a firm commitment to the development of their diploma students. In recognition of this achievement and the delivery of a range of WSET qualifications, the Sydney Wine Academy was awarded WSET’s International Educator of the Year for 2010-2011," said Mr Harris.
On 22 May a graduation dinner will celebrate this milestone with WSET’s Business Development Director, Asia-Pacific Jude Mullins presenting the successful graduates with their diplomas.

Sydney Wine Academy students win 2012 Taste Culture Austrian Wine Scholarship
Congratulations to our WSET Diploma students Leanne Altmann and Gerald O'Bryan winners of the inaugural Austrian Wine Scholarship 2012.
Over ninety wine trade professionals competed for four scholarships being offered by the Austrian Wine Marketing Board and Austrian wine importers.
Leanne and Gerald had to undertake a ninety-minute examination and blind tasting to win the highly sought after scholarships. As winners they will both be heading to Austria where they can experience Austrian wine and culture first hand.

Sydney Wine Academy student wins UK WSET Level 3 Scholarship
Former Ryde Campus Sommelier Certificate and SWA Level 3 student Paul Dietz has been awarded the Wine Australia Scholarship for 2011. This Scholarship is open to top achievers in the Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits from mainland China, North East Asia, South East Asia and Australia who have completed their studies in the last five years. Dan Murphy's WSET Level 2 graduates top 150
With the last two groups of Dan Murphy's staff completing their studies in Queensland and Melbourne recently, the Sydney Wine Academy counted the number of graduates that had completed the WSET Level 2 Intermediate course.
A huge 156 staff at Dan Murphy's have gone through the customised program since the Academy formed a training partnership with the retailer.

Student Sommelier of the Year award winner announced
The Sydney Wine Academy has won the Wine and Sprit Education Trust’ s (WSET) International Educator of the Year Award. The announcement was made at the annual graduation ceremony in the Guildhall in London. The Sydney Wine Academy received the award for their significant contribution to WSET courses and qualifications and their commitment to innovation in education in the past year.

Ryde Campus student Jeremy Foot has received the Fine Wine Partners - Philip Shaw Wines - Student Sommelier of the Year Award for 2010. The award is presented to the most outstanding graduate of NSI’s Sydney Wine Academy Certificate III in Hospitality - Sommelier course.
Jeremy received the perpetual trophy as well as an all expenses paid trip to visit Philip Shaw’s winery to taste their wines and meet the wine maker.
Jeremy said he was delighted to receive the accolade.
“Having only just made the transition to wine and hospitality when beginning the course I always felt out of my depth when listening to my fellow students.
“But the skills and knowledge gained throughout the year and the valuable insights of the teachers and my fellow students have brought me a long way in such a short time.”
Jeremy completed the Certificate III in Hospitality - Sommeliers course last year, achieving the highest mark in the class. At the same time, he successfully completed Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) Level 3 Certificate in Wines and Spirits course.
Jeremy now works as a sommelier at Rockpool Bar and Grill restaurant in Sydney.
“The opportunities that have arisen from my association with NSI and Fine Wine Partners have made me excited about the future.”
I would highly recommend the courses offered by the Sydney Wine Academy for anyone looking to cement a solid foundation in working with wine in a hospitality setting.”

International Educator of the Year Award
The Sydney Wine Academy has won the Wine and Sprit Education Trust’ s (WSET) International Educator of the Year Award. The announcement was made at the annual graduation ceremony in the Guildhall in London. The Sydney Wine Academy received the award for their significant contribution to WSET courses and qualifications and their commitment to innovation in education in the past year.
The (WSET) International Educator of the Year Award Riedel Trophy will be presented to the Sydney Wine Academy at an awards dinner, held in Sydney during April 2011. The Sydney Wine Academy Director, Clive Hartley said he was thrilled to hear the Academy had been chosen to receive such a prestigious award.
“Winning this award is a fantastic achievement recognising the hard work the whole team has put in to making the Academy a success ” said Clive. “It is a great honor to have been selected from wine educators across the world.”
“We have developed a good relationship with WSET, and we have worked hard together throughout the year to ensure that students receive the very best in wine education.”
