General English Program (Beginner to Advanced)

The General English Program consists of three general English courses. All General English Program courses are 20 class hours per week.
Certificate II in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- 5 to 25 weeks
- beginner to advanced
This program is for students who want to travel in Australia or to develop skills to communicate in English in social or work situations. Topics include listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, computer skills, vocabulary and basic grammar.
Students who complete this program may enrol in English for Further Study or Introduction to English Preparation for High School.
Certificate III in English for Further Study (EFS)
- 5 to 20 weeks
- intermediate to upper intermediate
- entry level is approximately 4.5 in all areas of IELTS
This program is for students who want to communicate more effectively in English at work or in social situations, or who want to prepare to study in TAFE or at university in an English speaking country, or for the IELTS test.
Students who complete this program are eligible for direct entry into TAFE NSW programs if they meet relevant academic requirements.
Certificate III in English for Further Study (Hospitality)
- 5 to 20 weeks
- intermediate to upper intermediate
- entry level is approximately 4.5 in all areas of IELTS
- available only to students doing a package English + TAFE hospitality program
- priority to students enrolling in hospitality courses at Crows Nest College.
This program is for students who want to prepare to study a TAFE hospitality course. It enables students to start specialising in the language of the hospitality industry while they complete their English. There is no extra fee, but students must buy their hospitality uniform and equipment before they start the last 10 weeks of this program.
Students who complete this program are eligible for direct entry into TAFE NSW programs if they meet relevant academic requirements.
Advanced English
- 5 to 10 weeks
- upper intermediate to advanced
- entry level is approximately IELTS 5.5 to 6
This program is for students who wish to become interpreters or to prepare for IELTS. It develops fluency, knowledge of English, and strategies for ongoing independent language learning after undertaking a formal language program. The focus of the course is on speaking, listening and reading skills. Students may also select to study an additional writing module.
High School Preparation Program
The High School Preparation Program consists of two 10-week courses which develop skills necessary to study successfully in an Australian high school. Students undertake regular homework, research tasks and assignments outside of class. The program includes excursions and visits to high schools. To track your progress, regular exam results and reports are sent to your guardian and your future high school.

Introduction to English Preparation for High School

- 10 weeks
- entry level IELTS 4.5 or equivalent
This program is for intermediate level students. It introduces you to Australian teaching and learning practices. It also teaches you about Australian culture and prepares you to communicate with schoolmates in an Australian high school. Areas covered included English language, study skills, English for key high school subjects, and orientation to Australian schools.
Students who complete this program can enrol in Year 10 at an Australian high school.
English Preparation for High School

- entry level IELTS 5 or equivalent
This program is for intermediate to upper intermediate students who want to study for the Higher School Certificate in an Australian high school or in TAFE NSW, or for the TAFE NSW Certificate in Tertiary Preparation. It develops to a higher level the knowledge and skills included in the Introduction to English Preparation for High School Program.
Students who complete this program can enrol in Year 11 at an Australian high school.
For Working Holiday-Makers
Intensive English plus Hospitality Service
- 10 weeks intensive general English.
- Responsible Service of Alcohol – for anyone who wants to work in any licensed premises in NSW (upper intermediate level of English required).
- Espresso Coffee Service at the Institute’s Sydney Coffee Academy, Ryde College.
This program is for people who want to learn as much English as possible in a short time, and then use that English for work or travel. Discounts apply if you enrol with another person or in a group. This is an excellent program for backpackers with lower intermediate English or higher, who want to find paid work in Australia.
