Beauty Therapist
A beauty therapist carries out facial and body treatments to enhance the appearance of their clients. The treatments could include facials, application of make-up, eyebrow and eyelash treatments, manicure and pedicures, removal of unwanted body and facial hair, UV and spray tanning, non-surgical skin rejuvenation therapies and electro-therapy treatments. They can also offer aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, reflexology and massage.
Spa Therapist
A spa therapist uses advanced beauty therapy skills such as aesthetic aromatherapy, use of essential oils and spa treatments including aromatic massage, reflexology and manual lymphatic drainage.
Salon Supervisor/Manager
A salon supervisor/manager a trains, recruits, selects and supervises staff and is responsible for the day to day operations of the salon.
Salon Owner
A salon owner may or may not have trained as a hairdresser. They are responsible for managing the business effectively and efficiently including financial planning, marketing, staff planning, recruitment and quality management.
Salon Assistant/Receptionist
A salon assistant/receptionist is responsible for booking appointments, answering the telephone, greeting and seating clients and offering refreshments. They are responsible for checking and ordering supplies.
Hairdresser
A hairdresser will cut, style, colour, straighten and permanently wave hair with chemical solutions and provide clients with hair and scalp treatments. Apprentice hairdressers undertake routine tasks in the initial stages, assisting senior hairdressers with client preparation, shampooing, conditioning, application and removal of simple hairdressing treatments, and steralisation and maintenance of equipment. As apprentices gain experience they carry out more complex tasks under supervision.
Specialist Hairdresser
A specialist hairdresser is a qualified hairdresser who has developed more complex technical skills and team leadership skills as a senior salon practitioner. They perform specialist services including haircutting, hair design and hair colour correction.
Salon Supervisor/Manager
The salon supervisor/manager trains, recruits, selects and supervises staff and is responsible for the day to day operations of the salon.
Salon Owner

Retail Cosmetic Assistant
A retail cosmetic assistant will work in a retail environment in a department store or specialist Make-up store and merchandise and sell make-up products and services.
Bridal Make-up Service
A Bridal Make-up Service applies make-up for special occasions such as weddings. This can be for the bride or the bridal party.
Make-up Artist
A make-up artist applies make-up to fashion and photographic models, actors and other performers involved in stage, film and television productions.
Make-up Artist Special Effects
This person works as a make-up artist in the entertainment, film, television and theatre industries and “creates something out of nothing” by using blood and gore make-up techniques, fantasy make-up and prosthetics.
Hair & Wig Stylist
Frequently trained as a make-up artist and hairstylist this role involves styling and dressing hair for a performance and fitting wigs and hairpieces.
Nail Technician
Nail technicians perform basic treatments such as manicures and pedicures in a beauty salon, spa or nail salon. They would also offer the creative application of acrylic nail enhancements and extensions, application of gel nails, nail repairs and decorative nail art. The nail technician would also advise clients on nail care and recommend nail care products.
