Director's Foreword

has been another excellent year for TAFE NSW - Northern Sydney Institute (NSI) and I am pleased to present to you the Institute Annual Report. The year has seen the Institute extend its role as a proactive leader in the development and delivery of world-class vocational education and training products and services.
...

During 2002 overall enrolments rose by 8.5% and annual student contact hours (ASCH) rose by 8.2%. Commercial enrolments grew by 25.5%, and 21,669 students successfully completed course requirements. The Institute met all its fiscal targets and achieved a further improvement in efficiency in the delivery of over 13 million annual student contact hours.

Behind the impressive organisational performance statistics lie many stories of individual student and staff excellence. NSI students achieved outstanding results academically and in various vocational training competitions, including three gold medals and one silver medal at the Worldskills Australia National Finals. The professionalism and excellence of NSI staff was recognised externally, with several teachers receiving Public Education and Training Excellence awards. At the same time, numerous staff members were recognised for their excellent work and achievements through NSI’s Recognition and Reward scheme which consists of a range of programs to acknowledge the Institute’s most valuable asset, its staff.

The Institute has been actively building upon current success and planning for a sustainable future. The NSI Strategic Directions 2002 – 2004 outlined our vision to “be recognised as leading through innovation, skilling for the knowledge economy and a global future” under the umbrella of the four key focus areas: our customers, our business, our people and our internal processes. The Institute’s whole of business approach, which focuses on people, processes and performance and is referred to as our “Business Framework,” is now well in place. The Business Framework includes a number of key web based tools available to all staff through NSI’s comprehensive intranet. The Institute in 2002 developed and integrated into its whole of business approach its service delivery strategy, capital development plan and an environmental policy action plan, identifying our profile, and areas for improvement in capital and environmental management throughout the Institute.

In June 2002 NSI achieved the major milestone of ISO 9001:2000 certification. The certification report reinforced and focused a number of strategies that had been undertaken to continuously improve processes and services to customers.

" For NSI, 2002 has been a year of high achievement
and focused organisational development "

The Institute has developed and implemented a highly visible and user-friendly web based tool to encourage innovation and the conversion of good ideas to new and improved products and services. The tool and its associated support infrastructure, called LINK, has been integrated into the NSI Business Framework as a key means for assigning funds and managing projects both within and outside the Institute’s business planning cycle.

In 2002 NSI staff engaged in a vast range of learning and development programs specifically designed to grow the Institute’s intellectual capital and to ensure their professional development. The Institute was also successful in bidding for numerous Australian National Training Authority “Reframing the Future” professional development projects. NSI learning and development initiatives have also supported the increasing numbers of staff who are involved in the growth of online and flexible course delivery.

NSI continues to build powerful links with industry and the local community. This report details a number of them, including several initiatives and opportunities introduced in 2002 designed to assist disadvantaged members of the community.

The Institute has established itself as the leader in information and communication technology training programs, which provide international vendor- accredited programs linked to national qualifications, through the expansion of its Cisco Regional Academy, Microsoft Certification programs and the introduction of its exclusive Oracle program.

For NSI, 2002 has been a year of high achievement and focused organisational development. The Northern Sydney Institute 2002 Annual Report captures many of the individual and organisational achievements and developments. TAFE NSW - Northern Sydney Institute proudly continued to provide public education and training services, to meet the needs of industry and the community whilst further contributing to the wealth of NSW through our many successful commercial endeavours.

I commend this report to you and welcome your contribution to our endeavours to continuously improve our performance in exceeding our stakeholders’ expectations.
